74th State Assembly candidate Karina Onofre asks Shelly Sterling to consider Orange County offer for Clippers
Irvine, California Wednesday May 28, 2014
State Assembly candidate Karina Onofre announced she has written an open letter to Los Angeles Clipper co-owner Shelly Sterling, and asked her to make Orange County a new home for the Clippers franchise. “For the Clippers, to be in Orange County would be like having your cake and eating it, too”, said Onofre.

Said Onofre, “I understand the unfair deadline pressures which have been placed upon you, but for the good of your family, for Southern California, for the NBA, and for millions of basketball fans across our great nation, I ask you to take the time to consider an Orange County proposal, which will soon be forthcoming”, continued Onofre. Last week Onofre submitted names of a blue-ribbon committee to move LA Clippers to Orange County.

Said Onofre, “I’m proud to field an All-Star Orange County team, who like me, see the unfortunate mess created in L.A. by Clippers owner Donald Sterling as a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the Clippers to finally move to Orange County.”

Onofre stated a member of her team met last week with Leigh Steinberg’s organization, and hoped the Newport Beach super-sports agent would lend a helping hand to the OC Clippers Task Force.

Members of Orange County Clippers Task Force are: Donald Craig, attorney and President of Orange County NAACP; Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait; Joyce Hall, Orange County Food Bank community philanthropist; Lou Rossetti, Executive Director of Apartment Association of Orange County and former District Director for Congressman John Campbell; Jeff Shanton, Orange County business owner and Lakers fan; Katherine Daigle, community activist and candidate for Irvine Mayor; Jeff Belle, Senior Advisor, Public Policy; S. Deacon Alexander, President of L.A. Black Panther Association and former Green Party candidate for Governor; Max Trueblood, airline analyst and twenty-two year Clippers fan; Mirna Burciaga, community leader, activist and restaurant small business owner; Efrain Nuno, business owner and founding member of ADELSA (Asociacion de Empresarios Latinos de Santa Ana); Edgar Sebastian Vasquez, Telemundo reporter, founder of InterAmericana sports league and small business restaurant owner.

Text of Karina Onofre’s letter to Shelly Sterling follows:

Dear Shelly Sterling,
I’m a lifelong Orange County resident. During my State Assembly campaign, I came across many Clippers fans, both in Los Angeles and Orange County, who urged me to speak out, and implore the Clippers organization to move to a new home in Orange County.
For the Clippers, to be in Orange County would be like having your cake and eating it, too. With the short high-speed rail between the Staples Center in L.A. and the Honda Center in Anaheim–the most likely spot for the Clippers in Orange County—this will link the two markets and your fans can continue to support and grow their love for the Clippers!
Blessed with over 3 million residents from every color, creed and religion, the O.C. has thousands of basketball fans, and can host the Clippers in an atmosphere of dignity, respect, and racial harmony. Orange County also has business leaders, including Henry Samueli and sports legend Leigh Steinberg, who I’m sure would like a serious conversation with you.
I understand the unfair deadline pressures which have been placed upon you, but for the good of your family, for Southern California, for the NBA, and for the millions of basketball fans across this nation, I ask you to take the time to consider an Orange County proposal, which will soon be forthcoming.
I hope to hear from you shortly.

Respectfully Submitted,
Karina Onofre Candidate for State Assembly 74th District
